Takeaway Thoughts

Pack up is in its last stages here at Campo Aventura.  Bags are being weighed on the horsepackers’ scale hanging from the tree.  Sand is being swept out from the casitas and we keep talking about how remarkable it is that we are now on the last day of our time here in Chile.  Later today we’ll fly from Puerto Montt on to Santiago, overnight to Toronto, on to Denver, and by tomorrow afternoon we’ll be rolling up in the Yukons to the Link basecamp.

In the trips I have been on with the school I have always tried to squeeze as much experience and meaning out of the trip as possible. I decided at the beginning of this expedition to try to live in the actual moment and not be chasing images of an experience that I had pre-formed in my thought.  By doing that over this last month in Patagonia I found that this really allowed me to appreciate everything I was actually engaged in and experiencing. As I have taken things in stride, I have grown and learned as I have always wanted to on a trip like this.  I feel full, satisfied, awed.

I have really loved the culture and the landscape we have been in on this entire trip. It is the kind of place that has a sense of inherent inclusiveness and where you don’t feel like an outsider the entire time.  The people here who have worked so selflessly and tirelessly have inspired me throughout the trip to keeping thinking about the Link theme for this year, “How can I make a difference for good?” We took some time last night to share goals we have been working on as individuals through the expedition relating to that theme. Everyone in the group had such great takeaway thoughts about how they had worked within themselves to make a difference for good, and also how they have seen that in others.

We have been so grateful for this trip and how it has made a difference for good in our lives.
